In an earlier level you see a less well formed humanoid come out, and later on a slightly better one, so you get to see them get better at cloning? I think the art book mentions discarding old flesh in favour of new bodies?
Perhaps the whole game was leading you to this portal to a higher plane, but you were doomed from the start, everyone had left without you? There are a ton of opened 'eggs' beneath the pregnant statues in the outer courtyards. I've not seen From Beyond but a quick search means I will soon! The idea of a central third eye has been around for thousands of years too! Very much centred on enlightenment. I never considered the last level a temple, but you are so spot on with that! We 'ascend' in an elevator to a much more beautiful space, there are intricate reliefs on the walls and statues everywhere, not to mention the countless crucified corpses around. Perhaps this is the reason for the title Scorn. And in the process he prevents anyone at all from escaping this wretched wasteland, condemning the hopes of an entire civilization. Moments before we make it through the rift the parasite attacks and permanently immobilizes us, his former host. Presumably he sees that because of his malformity he is going to be left behind. From the moment we fall host to this creature he is trying to kill us to prevent us from reaching our goal. So it is, then, that the second humanoid we play as falls victim to his mutant/parasite counterpart's spite. One can only imagine the desperation and hatred left to fester after all that time. His mishap with the goo at the beginning of the game must have mutated his body and left him waiting for centuries, unable to complete his pilgrimage or participate in the mind linking. The androids also evoke a somewhat familiar science fiction theme of humanity using technology as an intermediary vessel between the biological and the ethereal (looking at you 2001 A Space Odyssey).Īs for that cryptic ending, it becomes clear during the detachment operation in the Temple basement the parasite thats been hitching a ride the whole game is the first character we play as (the guy who wakes up in the title screen). It seems to me the function of these androids is to escort the gestalt conciousness in the temple atrium into the next "plane of existence" by literally carrying this linked overmind through the rift. It is also biologically responsible for controlling hormones that regulate reproduction, among other things. The pituitary gland has often been thought to house the Third Eye, or allow vision into higher planes of existence.
Of note are the fleshy eye growths that flower from the area of the pituitary gland on the two pregnant androids in the final sequence (nice From Beyond reference there). Further, all of the bio-organic machinery and technology we see acts in service of birthing and delivering humanoid pilgrims to the Temple and the rift within. The body horror also helps push the idea, obviously. We are constantly reminded we are creatures of flesh and bone because we are surrounded by environments made of the same stuff. This quest to escape the material plane, which the banal, visceral environment makes the player constantly aware, seems to be the sole focus of this civilization. The yonic rift (think birth canal) at the end symbolizes escape from suffering by entrance into a new existence, be it rebirth or nirvana or transcendence (the exact nature of the next place doesn't really matter imo). In the Birthing Temple the protagonist gives his life on the operating rack, in martyr-like fashion, for the fulfillment of an entire civilization's quest to escape their dying world, or perhaps species.
